Brassicaceae or Cruciferae: Plants in the mustard family are familiar denizens of the kitchen garden. Domestic mustards include horseradish, radishes, turnips and mustard. The yellow mustard that lines the store shelves is little more than the seeds of black mustard (Brassica) mixed with vinegar, (the bright yellow color is supplied by turmeric). A whole line of vegetables - cabbage, cauliflower, kohlrabi, brussel sprouts, broccoli, and kale - all all cultivars of a single species, Brassica oleracea, which explains the exceptional health benefits to be gained by including them in your diet on a regular basis. Heart healthy canola oil is also produced from a Brassica seed plant. Sulfurous mustard oil plays an important role in the medicinal value of this plant family both as a stimulant to digestion and in externally in poultices and plasters. Elpel, Thomas J.
