Plants Belonging To Hamamelidaceae
The Witch Hazel family consists of a small number of trees and shrubs usually with alternate leaves that are native to the eastern half of North America. They are closely related to the Sycamores which only grow in the southern states. The Sweet Gum tree, Liquidambar, is a native southern favorite whose sap can be used for chewing gum. It is also used in folk medicine traditions and shares the family characteristic of being astringent and expectorant in effect. Elpel, Thomas J.
