The sense of smell is the only sense that goes directly to the limbic system, the center of memory and emotions. Scent can provoke powerful and primal feelings. We are all familiar with the experience of strong emotions a familiar scent can provoke. Many functions of the body and mind may be regulated by smell, such as hormone balance, breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, stress levels and memory.
One of the reasons aromatherapy works so well is that it works on both the emotional level and the physical level at the same time. Essential oils like chamomile and lavender calm the mind and relax the physical body as well.
