Cayenne contains natural pain relieving compounds
In herbal treatment today, capsaicin is used for rheumatism, arthritis, and as an internal disinfectant and a heart stimulant.
capsaicin, an extract from cayenne and other peppers, can dramatically reduce chronic nerve pain. Studies have proven its usefulness for arthritis, shingles, trigeminal neuralgia, and diabetic neuropathy. Applied topically, the capsaicin in cayenne blocks a chemical involved in the nerve transmission of pain. It appears to act by decreasing the concentration of substance P, the primary chemical used by nerve cells to transmit pain signals. This effect can require several weeks of regular use. Massage a balm containing cayenne into your temples for headaches, or take encapsulated cayenne.
Cayenne is also rich in salicylates, natural aspirin like compounds. Cayenne pepper warms the body by quickly dilating small capillaries and increasing circulation to the skin. The herb's most prominent attribute is to increase circulation, and is often added to activate and complement other herbs.
In first aid applications, capsaicin is applied topically to quickly stimulate blood flow to an injured area while acting as a nerve block and reducing pain. The powdered herb when applied to an open wound, helps stem bleeding.

Cayenne or Capsicum derives its name from the Greek, 'to bite', in allusion to the hot pungent properties of the fruit and seeds. First introduced to Britian from India in 1548 and Gerard mentioned it as being cultivated in his time. It was mentioned by the physician who accompanied Columbus on his second voyage to America. |
All kinds of guinea pepper are under Mars, and are of a fiery, sharp, biting taste, and of a temperature hot and dry, to the end of the fourth degree; they burn and inflame the mouth and throat so extremely that it is hard ot be endured, and if it be outwardly applied to the skin in any part of the body, it will exulcerate and raise it as if it had been burnt with fire, or scalded with hot water. Nicholas Culpeper |

Put a heaping tablespoon of dried and powered cayenne pepper in a shallow pan over a low flame and allow the fumes to pervade the air. Mice, rats, even cockroaches abhor the fumes, which are perfectly safe for humans and pets. | Carry Tabasco sauce (cayenne peppers in vinegar) with you when you travel to protect against unsanitary food preparation. | To remove capsaicin from the hands, milk or vinegar may be more effective than water |
