The neem tree is a native of India and has been use in Ayurvedic medicine since ancient times, and is one of the oldest medicines in use today. Neem oil is exceptionally rich and contains a heavy, slightly unpleasant odor.
Neem oil has antibacterial and antifungal activity. The oil has moisturizing and regenerative properties, contains Vitamin E, and has essential fatty acids, and is commonly used to treat a variety of skin conditions such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, scabies, and athletes foot. Neem oil is has been used as a traditional cure all in India for centuries, but is not recommended for internal used here in the West.
In the garden, neem stands out as a highly effective, but non-toxic insecticide. Neem contains more than 25 active compounds that combat insects. Neem also works as a systemic which is absorbed into the plant to be ingested by feeding insects. Many beneficial insects are unharmed by Neem because they do not feed from the plant. |

A good homemade insecticide spray for the garden can be made by adding 1 teaspoon of castile soap to 1 gallon of warm water. For increased effectiveness add a few drops of neem oil, crushed garlic, or hot pepper juice. Test your blend on a few plants to gauge effect before spraying the whole garden, then apply weekly until bugs are gone. |

| Use caution if using internally. Because of Neem Oil’s strength, we recommend that you do additional research before using Neem Oil internally. Children and pregnant or nursing women should not use Neem. Infants have died as a result of internal use of Neem.
Long term use of the oil has been linked with liver and kidney dysfunction.
Large doses of Neem may be toxic. If you are currently on medication, consult with a doctor before using Neem. Not enough studies have been done on drug interactions. Keep away from children and pets.

Neem is an evergreen tree of moderate height of 30 to 40 feet having crescent shaped toothy leaves and a large growth of white flowers. The flowers of neem smell sweet especially at night. All parts of the neem tree were used - the leaves, twigs, and oil from the nuts.
