Shea butter is becoming more popular here in the West as we discover its marvelous uses in skin care. Shea is rich in vitamins, minerals and fatty acids that rejuvenate and hydrate skin and hair. Use shea butter alone or in homemade skin preparations to treat damaged skin, help heal wounds, or just pamper yourself with a whole body treatment.

Pure shea butter has a soft, pliable texture, is naturally cream colored and has a pleasant nutty scent. Bleached and refined shea butter does not retain its medicinal properties, so be sure to obtain it from a reputable vender that specializes in natural products. (Like Mountain Rose;)

Plant Description

Vitellaria paradoxa nuts
Vitellaria paradoxa nuts

She trees are found exclusively in the African Sahel, a semiarid region south of the Sahara Desert. Shea trees grow between 150 to 200 years old. Nut is almost 50 percent fat. Shea is known as karite in the Dioula language, or Women's gold, because it brings the womens of the villages significant income and is one of the few economic commodites under womens control in Sahelian Africa. The trees have been cared for by women farmers and their children for hundreds of years, but there is some concerns that the growing popularity of the shea could contribute to overharvesting. 1

History and Traditions
historyThe majority of Shea Butter is prepared by hand in small villages across western Africa. Shea Butter processing is historically done by village women, and the method which they use has been passed down to them through their elders. To produce Shea Butter, the nuts are first picked from the Shea Tree and cracked, grilled, and pounded by hand. They are then boiled in water until the oil rises to the surface of the kettle. This oil is then scooped into gourds, where it is allowed to cool. Once that the oil has cooled, it thickens into a butter-like consistency. Mountain Rose Herbs
