Sweet woodruff has been used in Europe since the Middle Ages as both food and medicine. The Germans used it to flavor the traditional May wine, Maiwein ,drunk in celebration of the return of spring and of life and fertility. Sweet woodruff was used as a vulnerary herb, to treat wounds and stop bleeding, and was taken internally for stomach upsets and liver problems. Sweet woodruff teas are anti-inflammatory, dirutic and gently sedating.

Sweet woodruff contains asperuloside that can be converted into prostaglandins (hormone-like compounds that stimulate the uterus and affect blood vessels), making the genus of great interest to the pharmaceutical industry. ^{Mountain Rose Herbs}

Side Effects:

Sweet woodruff contains coumarin, which give it its sweet scent. Very high doses of coumarin can be toxic, which lead to a bann of its use in commerical food stuffs in Germany since 1981. Sweet woodruff has a long history of safe use, and no side effects have been reported using the whole herb in teas.

How to Use: Sweet Woodruff

Preparation Methods :Strongly scents when dried, sweet woodruff is used in potpourris, and perfumes. The leaves can be used in herbal teas.
