Using Herbs for Natural Skin Care-Oils & Herbs
Vegetable, nut and seed oils have many uses which include acting as a carrier for aromatherapy essential oil applications, healthy cooking, and as a base for your homemade cosmetics. They also work well as stand alone skin care applications. There are several hundred plants known to have oil-bearing seeds, but only a few are produced commercially.
Oils that have been extracted through expeller or cold pressed methods offer much better quality and therapeutic benefits than the oils you find lining the shelves at your local supermarket. Oils that have been processed through heat and intensive hydraulic action, or through the use of solvent, hexane or alcohol are undesirable and relatively unhealthy. |

Almond oil For: Skin care, aromatherapy carrier |
 Profile
| This pale yellow oil is extracted fro the almond kernel and contains glucosides, minerals, and vitamins. Rich in protein, it is great for all skin types. Helps to relieve dry skin, itching, soreness and inflammation. It is truly marvelous as an aromatherapy carrier oil or alone in skin care. | |
|
Andiroba For: Skin care |
 Profile
| Andiroba oil accelerates healing of skin damage by providing myristic acid, one of the chemical building blocks of an enzyme that links together the proteins that form the skin's protective outer layer. In treating psoriasis, this chemical also signals skin cells when it is time to stop growing, which prevents scaling. One of the fatty acids found in andiroba oil, linolenic acid, also helps restore a normal life cycle to skin cells. This chemical stops the uncontrolled growth of skin cells in psoriasis, as well as the uncontrolled growth of the pigment-producing cells that cause age spots. Commercially, andiroba is also used as a base for antiwrinkle creams such as Aveda and Oil of Olay. The fats in the oil transport healing alpha-hydroxy acids and other ingredients as they moisturize and protect the skin. Phyllis A. Balch, Prescription for Herbal Healing (2002) | |

Apricol Oil For: Skin care oils |
 Profile
| Apricot oil is used as a substitute for Oil of Almonds, which it very closely resembles. It is far less expensive and finds considerable employment in cosmetics, for its softening action on the skin. It is often fraudulently added to genuine Almond oil and used in the manufacture of soaps, cold creams and other preparations of the perfumery trade. Maud Grieve, Modern Herbal Vol 1 (1931) | |

Chamomile oil For: Skin care, eczema |
 Profile
| Chamomile reduces inflammation, regenerates skin tissue, and soothes the discomfort and itching of eczema. Chamomile flower extracts are helpful in managing eczema by increasing the numbers of the immune cells that engulf and eliminate infectious microorganisms, but do not stimulate other immune cells that might aggravate the condition. If chamomile is steamed or placed in hot water, a substance called chamazulene, which has markedly anti-allergenic properties, is formed. Phyllis A. Balch, Prescription for Herbal Healing (2002) | |
