Childrens herbs

There are many herbs that are gentle enough to use in treating babies and children. However I recommend you consult a qualified herbalist, and get good reference books to guide you.

General dosage Guideline When using herbs and essential oils for children, always double check the safety of the herb first. For children under the age of 13, reduce dosages to half that of an adult dose, and continue to reduce by age and weight.

Agrimony an astringent action on the bladder and is used for control of bed-wetting in older children. 1

Anise The seeds, the part most frequently used, ar tonic and stomachic, valuable for flatulence or infant colic. 1

Caraway Distilled Caraway water is considered a useful remedy in the flatulent colic of infants, and is an excellent vehicle for children's medicine. 2

Catnip is good in restlessness, colic, and nervousness, and is used as a mild nervine for children, one of its chief uses being, indeed, in the treatment of children's ailments. An injection of Catnep Tea is also used for colicky pains. 2

Chamomile A gentle and effect herb for infants and children, calming and reassuring to small spirits. Baby's first bath is a special delight with it is made with chamomile flowers. 3

Dill This mouth watering herb stimulates digestion and is especially good at relieving gas pains in children. 3 Like the other umbelliferous fruits and volatile oils, both the herb dill and the oil of Dill plants possess stimulant, carminative and stomachic properties, making them of considerable medicinal value. Dill Water, which is a common domestic remedy for the flatulence of infants is a useful vehicle for children's medicine generally. 2
