Scabies The word 'scabies' is Latin for itch, and the itching caused by scabies is intense. Sleep tight and don't let the bedbugs bite. This old nursery rhyme could very well be referring to scabies, a microscopic mite that burrows into the skin to lay its eggs. Infected bedding, and clothing transmit the mites, and outbreaks are common among those with comprised immune systems, and occur frequently where people are living in close quarters, as in schools, summer camp, and nursing homes. Keep an eye on pets and they too, can be infected.
Lice are common parasites that infest the hair
and are showing increasing resistance to over-the-counter treatments.
