Homemade Horehound Cough Drops

The uses of horehound have come down to us from the Greeks, Romans, and from our own North American herbal traditions. Horehound was an accepted medicinal plant in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia until 1989 and is still endorsed in Europe as an effective cold medicine. 418

You can still find old fashioned horehound cough drops sold in stores, but homemade ones are best. Keep a supply on hand for winter colds - makes a great seasonal gift too.

Ingredients:
Horehound *
Recipe Instructions: Syrup :
  • 1 cup horehound infusion
  • 2 cups white sugar
  1. Put the sugar in a small but deep saucepan
  2. Stir in 1/8 teaspoon cream of tarter
  3. Add the horehound tea and Stir until sugar has dissolved
  4. Cook over low heat until it reaches just 290 degrees on a candy thermometer, or until a drop in cold water will become a hard glassy ball.
  5. Pour on a buttered plate and score into cough drop sizes when it has half hardened.
  6. When cool, break apart and keep in cool place until used
